April 24, 2015 Tentative Agreement Reached!

The Lesley Adjunct Faculty Bargaining Committee is pleased to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement with the Lesley Administration for a three-year contract!

We have met with university representatives on many occasions over the past 10 months. These negotiations were not always easy, but were always conducted in a respectful, honest and collegial manner.

 

TENTATIVE AGREEMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Our tentative agreement makes important progress toward achieving many of our goals:

  • Fair pay that values teaching:   Most Adjunct Faculty will receive a 33% increase in pay over the next 3 years. Faculty teaching studio courses in LUCAD and in the MFA Creative Writing Program will see increases between 10% and 18% over the same time period.
  • Job Security:   Adjunct Faculty who taught 3 courses per year over a 4-year period shall have the opportunity to receive 2-year appointments with a minimum commitment of 3 courses offered. These Adjunct Faculty members will have enhanced benefits including a contribution to the retirement plan and tuition remission for courses taught at Lesley. There are over 90 Adjunct Faculty in this group.
  • Canceled Courses and Low Enrollment:   Lesley will pay a 15% cancellation fee for courses cancelled within 3 weeks of the start of a semester (2 weeks prior to shorter terms) and courses with 7 or more students will be paid at 100% pay (4 or more students for Expressive Therapy and Counseling/Psychology Clinical Supervision Courses). Courses with less than 7 students will be pro-rated based on a percentage of 7 students.
  • Inclusion in the Lesley Community:   Lesley Adjunct Faculty will have more support for teaching and will be represented in both the University Council and Faculty Assembly (non-voting) for the first time.
  • Professional Development Fund:   Lesley Adjunct Faculty will have access to $25,000 per year to support research, scholarship, civic engagement, and professional and artistic practice that contributes to pedagogy.

CONTRACT RATIFICATION
Our contract cannot go into effect until it is voted on and approved by the part-time faculty. As your Bargaining Committee, we overwhelmingly recommend that the tentative agreement be ratified.

We want to be clear that this is a positive victory for all Lesley Adjunct Faculty and our students. You share in this victory because of your participation in meetings and actions, including organizing the planned – though never realized – ‘Day Without Adjuncts’.

We thank all of those who worked to make this happen and all who supported us in our efforts, including core faculty and Lesley student activists. In addition, we thank all of our colleagues and students – with whom we engage in the core instructional and educational mission of the university – which in the end is what our efforts and ambitions are all about.

 

 

INFORMATIONAL & VOTING SESSIONS
We urge all Adjunct Faculty to attend one of the meetings being held to provide further information on the tentative agreement, to discuss its implications, and to vote to ratify our first union contract.
